Hit the Pot Game (Topfschlagen)
You put candy in a pot (we like letting the kids pick it) and place it somewhere in the room/yard.
Then, you blindfold the first person seeking the pot (we always go from youngest to oldest). and place them somewhere else in the same room/yard as the candy. They go down on their hands and knees and begin crawling around trying to find the pot using their spoon/wooden stick.

We started playing this game during Covid. If youβve been following me for a while, then you know during covid we did Family Theme Nights, where the kids picked countries or fun themes like Circus/Zoo, and we would play games and make food based on that theme. When we did countries I strived to be as authentic as possible, really researching what food was true to the culture and areas as well as the games.
Around Halloween 2020, we decided to make the theme German (yes, weβre part German/Austrian in this house, but much like my side, my husband is very βAmericanβ at this point, so traditional German things donβt tend to show up much). As part of our Halloween fun since we were not trick or treating, we decided we would play a couple of German Games. We found βHit the Potβ and it just seemed like a perfect game to play for Halloween. My kids (including the teenagers) love this game. They still ask for it every birthday, party, and Halloween.
βHit the Potβ Game Equipment
- 2 or more children (or adults)
- a metal pot
- a wooden spoon or small stick
- a blindfold or scarf
- Candy of your Choice (If you want to be authentic, you could order German Chocolate, but I honestly buy what the kids enjoy).
How to Play βHit the Potβ
You put candy in a pot (we like letting the kids pick it) and place it somewhere in the room/yard.
Then, you blindfold the first person seeking the pot (we always go from youngest to oldest). and place them somewhere else in the same room/yard as the candy. They go down on their hands and knees and begin crawling around trying to find the pot using their spoon/wooden stick.
The seeking, blindfolded person, must crawl around the floor, tapping a spoon on any object it comes across, trying to find the cooking pot with candy inside. Everyone else helps by crying out βwarm,β βhot,β or βcoldβ depending on how near or far the seeker is from the pot.
This is where the rules can varyβ¦
You can time the search, if the pot isnβt found when time is up the next person gets to go. Remember theyβre blindfolded, so you can position them anywhere in the room, it doesnβt have to be the same spot every time. Whoever finds the pot first wins all the candy in the pot.
OR
You can let each person go until they find the pot of candy, choose one piece, move the pot to another spot, and keep going letting each kid find a piece of candy.
Weβve played both ways and each is fun in its own way. Give it a go and share in the comments what you and your family/friends thought about it!
