How to: Connect Crochet Foundation Stitches for “in the Round” Projects

Crochet Foundation Stitches (such as the Foundation Single Crochet or Foundation Double Crochet) are methods for beginning a project that allows you to work your foundation row (or chain row) at the same time as your first row of crochet stitches. It’s great for long foundation projects or when you need something with a little extra give. But what happens when you need to put those stitches into the round, like the bottom of the Wine Glass Lanyard Crochet Pattern, or the Birch Leaf Ear Warmer? Well, today, I’m sharing with you how to put those stitches together into the round so you can make even more fun projects!

Well, today, I’m sharing with you how to put those stitches together into the round so you can make even more fun projects!

Below is the “How To” in writing. I have also included the YouTube Video I did as well.

I’m using the Foundation Double Crochet for my images and the Foundation Single Crochet for my YouTube Video, but this technique works for all three foundation crochet stitches.

OK, Now On to The Pattern

Terms to Know

  • Ch(s): chain(s)
  • YO: Yarn Over
  • St(s): stitch(es)
  • FDC: Foundation Double Crochet

Materials

    BEFORE YOU GET STARTED…

    Make sure that the foundation stitch you choose to use is correct for the pattern you are using. If it calls for Ch 49, then 48 sc, you’ll do 48, FSC to start. I also recommend that you have a long tail before you start your foundation crochet. you’ll see at the end of this “pattern” why.

    Pattern:

    1. Complete all FDC for your desired pattern. Make Sure your work isn’t twisted.

    2. Insert the hook into the very first stitch made, YO, pull up and through the loop on the hook (one loop on your hook). You just made a slip stitch.

    3. You now have your “In The Round” First Row and Ch

    There will likely be a gap (which will vary in size based on the stitch size)

    Remember that LONG Tail I suggested you make at the beginning? Use that to sew that gap closed. You can do this now or once your project is done.
