How to: Use Fish Sauce

OH FISH SAUCE, one of my favorite additions to food. I can’t imagine a world without it. but I have found, at least around my non-Asian peeps, that it is heavily misunderstood. The biggest misconception about fish sauce is that it’s “fishy.” And sure, it might smell fishy—I mean… it’s MADE OF FISH—but in cooking, it actually functions more like salt, and brings a deeper, savory, umami punch to whatever it’s splashed into (Even more than Soy Sauce that, IMHO, is a bit overly loved by Americans).

Recipe: Asian Cucumber Salad

I love, love, love this salad! Cucumbers are wonderfully cooling and even with that touch of spice, this salad is still a welcome snack during the summer heat. I went on a bit of a hiatus eating this salad, I grew up with my dad eating it a lot in the summers and when I was little, cucumbers were not my thing. but recently, I came back to it, want to try it again, and found a new love for it. I introduced it to my husband this year and he loves it so much that he said he wants to grow some cucumbers just so I can make it.

Bread Machine Steamed Bao Buns or Hé Yè Bāo (荷葉包)

Steamed Bao Buns (Baozi, 包子) are amazing. They are such a fun change-up to your typical US bread/biscuits. For me, they are incredibly nostalgic. I have memories of helping with my dad and my nai nai when we visited Texas in much younger years. It wasn’t a common meal in my house, but I was feeling a little nostalgic one day and decided to attempt the recreation of my nai nai’s version and way of making them (and she did use a scale 🤫).

Canning things I’ve learned… so Far

There are some many website with different ways to can, what is OK and what is not and it gets a bit over whelming. Thankfully, I have friends who can, so I was able to ask them and weed out some of the ridiculous things from the internet. At this point, all I have really canned is tomatoes and jam but I’m hoping to do more now that I have a pressure cooker. Until then… Here are some things I have learned so far about canning:
