How to Build a Beautiful Dessert Board
Dessert boards may look fancy, but they are actually one of the easiest things to put together.
Step 1: Start with the Larger Items
Place bowls, ramekins, chocolate bars, and stacks of graham crackers around the board first.
Step 2: Add Height and Texture
Layer cookies, stack marshmallows, and vary the shapes and sizes throughout the board to make everything feel full and inviting.
Step 3: Fill in Empty Spaces
Use smaller candies, fruit, pretzels, or mini marshmallows to fill in gaps and make the board feel abundant.
Step 4: Keep Similar Colors Spread Out
Try not to place all the chocolate or all the bright colors in one section. Spreading everything around helps the board feel balanced and visually interesting.
Step 5: Don’t Overthink It
Honestly, the slightly overflowing, cozy look is part of the charm.
This is dessert… not a math test 😂

No firepit? No problem.
You can still enjoy this dessert board indoors using:
- tabletop burners
- gas fireplaces
- oven broilers
- air fryers
- microwave marshmallows for quick s’mores
This makes it a fun option year-round, especially during rainy weather or winter movie nights.
Jenn’s Kitchen Tip
If you’re serving this outdoors during summer, keep extra chocolate in the fridge until serving time.
Nothing melts faster than chocolate sitting on a Wisconsin patio in July 😂
You can also prep the entire board ahead of time and simply add the marshmallows and chocolate right before guests arrive.
Cooking With Kids
This is one of my favorite dessert boards to make with kids because there are so many easy ways they can help.
Kids can:
- sort candies and toppings
- arrange cookies and crackers
- help fill bowls
- create their own s’mores combinations
- build “signature” s’mores flavors for family members
If younger kids are helping roast marshmallows, always keep a close eye near firepits or burners and use longer roasting sticks for safety.
Favorite S’mores Combination Ideas

Frequently Asked Questions
You can prep most of the board several hours ahead of time. I recommend adding fresh fruit and marshmallows closer to serving time for the best texture.
Any large cutting board, serving tray, or platter works great. Even a sheet pan can work for larger gatherings.
Absolutely. This is one of my favorite easy party desserts because guests naturally gather around it.
Classic milk chocolate is always a hit, but mixing in dark chocolate, peanut butter cups, and flavored chocolate bars makes the board feel extra fun.

S’mores Dessert Platter
- Total Time: 20 minutes
- Yield: 10 people 1x
Description
S’mores dessert platters are a delightful and simple way to upgrade this traditional camping favorite.
Ingredients
Graham crackers, I’ve also seen chocolate-covered Graham Cracker squares, and they have become a fav in this house for S’mores.
Cookies: Oreos, chocolate chip, oatmeal, fudge striped, and pretty much any Girl Scout cookie (or store version of GSC) works.
Marshmallows, I mean it’s not a s’more without marshmallows!
Chocolate bars (Any chocolate is great! Dark, milk, cookies + cream, white, or ruby will work.
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are amazing for this!
Fruit (if you want to try to tell yourself it’s “healthy” you could use any type of berries, apples, or pears. Just make sure your slice them, it’s easier to eat)
Peanut butter (or other kinds of nut butter).
Instructions
- Arrange chosen ingredients (from above) on the platter or tray of choice in a fun/pretty way (think of it like art, so honestly whatever you think is perfect. Remember, art is subjective).
- If you choose peanut butter, scoop some into a small bowl/ramekin and tuck it into the platter with a cute butter knife for spreading.
- Place skewers down along the sides of the platter or tray. I like these extendable roasting sticks because I can use them at our tiny gas fireplace or a camping fire and they work great for both! They’re also really inexpensive and easy to store away. You can also use the heavy-duty ones for hot dogs as well.
